Black Flag, formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California, pioneered hardcore punk. Known for intense performances and a DIY ethic, their sound blended punk with heavy metal and jazz. Popular songs include "Rise Above" and "Nervous Breakdown". Their album "Damaged" is a genre cornerstone, and their SST Records label influenced independent music.
