Dmitri Shostakovich with Walter and Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), born in Salzburg, Austria, was a classical child prodigy. He composed over 600 masterpieces across genres like opera, symphony, and chamber music. Known for his elegant, balanced style, his famous works include "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," "The Magic Flute," and Symphony No. 40. He is considered one of Western music's greatest composers.

Dmitry Shostakovich, born in St. Petersburg, was a Russian composer known for his 15 symphonies and quartets. His style evolved from experimental to melancholic and nationalistic. Notable works like "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" and the "Fifth Symphony" faced Soviet scrutiny. His "Seventh Symphony" became globally celebrated during WWII. Despite government criticism, he masterfully portrayed Soviet life and later addressed sensitive themes like in "Babi Yar." Collaborated with artists like Toscanini, he received worldwide acclaim yet faced artistic repression. Shostakovich's music remains profound and impactful.
