The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome HAIM to the Museum’s intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater for an evening celebrating their latest album, I quit, with a discussion about their creative process. There will be a special live performance to follow.
The fourth full-length from multiplatinum trio HAIM, I quit is a monument to the unmatched power in unapologetically shedding what’s holding you back. Since the release of Women in Music Pt. III—a 2020 LP that made them the first all-female rock group ever to earn a GRAMMY nomination for Album of the Year—Southern California sisters Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim have deliberately done away with the habits and circumstances that dragged them down, instead choosing the thrill and expansion of new experience. Born from a creative transformation they refer to as “becoming the band we’ve always wanted to be,” I quit reveals the wildly sweeping impact of that self-reclamation—ultimately arriving as HAIM’s boldest and most unbridled body of work to date.
As Alana explains, I quit’s title surfaced from a longtime inside joke inspired by the 1996 movie That Thing You Do!. “For years we’ve always said ‘I quit’ when we check the mic, and while we were recording this album we named the files I quit on a whim,” she recalls. “But as the writing progressed, we realized every single song has a theme of quitting something that isn’t working for us anymore. Now it feels like an incredibly beautiful title, because quitting means a new beginning. Sometimes you need to quit to make room for great things to happen.”
Co-produced by HAIM’s frequent collaborator Rostam Batmanglij and Danielle Haim, I quit expands on the potent and daringly fluid sound of WIMPIII—a widely lauded album that landed on best-of-the-year lists from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and NPR, with lead single “The Steps” scoring a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance. “With WIMPIII it felt like we’d cracked open the door to sounding exactly how we’ve always wanted to sound, but with I quit the door was fully open,” says Alana. Recorded at Batmanglij’s studio and at the historic Valentine Recording Studios in HAIM’s homeland of the San Fernando Valley, the new album elegantly merges the power trio’s combustible live performance with plenty of in-the-box experimentation on the part of Danielle, who also co-produced WIMPIII and HAIM’s gold-certified, GRAMMY-nominated 2013 debut LP Days Are Gone. “We’ve always loved capturing that sound of us banging on drums in an open room, but then also exploring what happens when you plug HAIM into a computer,” says Danielle. “It’s a dynamic that’s intrigued us since the first album, but now we’re so much more well-versed in the studio and can play with that even more.”
HAIM are on a North American headlining tour, with UK dates to follow in October.
