Johnny Dowd

The Mekons are a group of sonic adventurers, punk rock fundamentalists, exuberant Luddites, and willing outcasts. Rock critic Lester Bangs described them as the most revolutionary group in the history of rock 'n' roll.

Formation and Evolution

This genre-defying band formed in Leeds, England, in 1977. Emerging from the British punk scene, they evolved from art students with no musical skills into the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Since the mid-1980s, their classic lineup has remained intact, regularly touring and releasing music.

Innovative Collaborations

The Mekons have an improbable history that includes a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music, along with occasional forays into the art world. Working collaboratively and collectively, all work is credited to the band. Their outputs include high art and low art blurring exhibitions in the UK and US, a deranged pirate musical with Kathy Acker, an art performance with Vito Acconci, and books such as the unique art catalog/unfinished novel, Mekons United.

Continuing Legacy

The documentary "Revenge of the Mekons" was released nationwide in 2015 on Music Box Films, capturing the band's bold and unpredictable music while staying true to their punk ethos. They remain an exceptional live band, and their last album, "Exquisite," was recorded remotely during the early months of lockdown and released on Bandcamp in June 2020.

Upcoming Projects

The band is collaborating with Fire Records on a new album set for release in 2025. The single from that album, "You're Not Singing Anymore," will be released in early November 2024 on Fire Records.
