New Jersey singer/songwriter John Gorka, known for his rich baritone, was a leading voice of the mid-’80s new folk movement. He won the 1984 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Award and debuted with I Know (1987), later touring with Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Boston-based folk singer/songwriter and guitarist Patty Larkin began recording in the mid-’80s for Philo, then made acclaimed albums for HighStreet from 1991. Her introspective songs and guitar work draw comparisons to Bonnie Raitt. Released Watch the Sky (2008) and 25 (2010).
Christine Lavin, a notable figure from NYC's '80s songwriter scene, is celebrated for her humorous take on contemporary romance. Known for songs like "If You Need Space, Go to Utah," she has released numerous albums across various labels. Lavin founded Four Bitchin' Babes and is recognized for promoting fellow artists. She also co-created an environmentally themed children's book and penned a memoir, "Cold Pizza for Breakfast."
