Boston Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1881, is a leading U.S. symphonic ensemble. Known for 20th-century RCA Victor recordings and for Koussevitsky’s premieres of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, plus Tanglewood.
Athens-born violinist and conductor Leonidas Kavakos won the International Sibelius Competition (1985). His 1990 Sibelius Violin Concerto recording earned Gramophone’s Concerto of the Year. He has toured widely and recorded with Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma.
Zwickau-born Robert Schumann, a German Romantic composer, shaped the era with expressive piano works, Lieder, and symphonies. His innovative style blended emotion and literature. He was also an influential music critic.
Hannu Lintu, a Finnish conductor from Rauma, is acclaimed for his dynamic style and orchestral insight. An alumnus of the Sibelius Academy, he won the Nordic Conducting Competition in 1994. He leads the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and Orquestra Gulbenkian, and is Artistic Partner of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Director of the International Sibelius Festival. He is also appointed Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. His recordings have garnered International Classical Music Awards and GRAMMY nominations.
