Igor Stravinsky, the Russian-born titan of 20th-century music, revolutionized classical sound with his bold rhythms and innovative harmonies. His iconic ballets "The Firebird," "Petrushka," and the riot-inducing "The Rite of Spring," created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, remain cornerstones of modernism. He also explored neoclassicism and serialism.
Sergei Prokofiev, a Russian composer born in 1891, forged a distinctive, often percussive and lyrical style in classical music. He is celebrated for masterpieces like the ballets "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella," the children's tale "Peter and the Wolf," and powerful piano concertos. His unique voice, blending modern harmonies with classical structure, profoundly shaped 20th-century music.
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer, a pivotal figure in musical Impressionism. Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he revolutionized classical music with evocative harmonies and unique structures. His renowned works include "Clair de lune," "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune," and "La mer." He won the Prix de Rome, leaving an enduring legacy on 20th-century music.
