Formed in Sacramento, California in 1991, Cake mixed funk, hip-hop, country, jazz, and rock with deadpan, satirical vocals from John McCrea. Best known for the hit "The Distance" from 1996’s Fashion Nugget; later hits included "Never There" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket."

Y La Bamba’s seventh album, Lucha, led by vocalist and producer Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, explores love, queerness, Mexican American and Chicanx identity, and healing. Begun during COVID-19 lockdowns, it started with a cover of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”
