The North Carolina Symphony, founded in Chapel Hill in 1932, is a pioneering classical orchestra known for its statewide service and extensive music education. As the first state-funded symphony, it performs diverse genres, from classical masterworks to folk and pops, and has presented over 50 premieres. Led by Grammy-winning Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto.
"Rhapsody in Blue," composed by George Gershwin in 1924, is an iconic American musical composition. Originating in New York City, it masterfully blends classical music with jazz and blues, creating a distinctly American, modernist style. Known for its memorable melodies and the famous opening clarinet glissando, it established Gershwin as an eminent composer. Commissioned by Paul Whiteman and orchestrated by Ferde Grofé, this work is celebrated for defining the Jazz Age.
Carlos Miguel Prieto, a Mexican conductor from Mexico City, is celebrated for his charismatic and expressive interpretations in classical music. He champions Latin American and new works, earning a Grammy Award and being named Musical America's 2019 Conductor of the Year. Prieto is known for collaborations and dedication to music education.
